Talybryn House has been awarded the Visit Wales Gold Award in July 2007, in recognition of the outstanding quality, exceptional comfort and hospitality offered.  Talybryn House is only one of 25 guest houses throughout Wales to achieve this prestigious listing success.  No wonder that many of the guests are regular visitors and are now part of the extended family, with numerous repeat visits! 

Built in 1877 as a gentleman’s country residence Talybryn House has been lovingly restored by the Dunne & Shaw families.  Opened to guests in 2003 and have recently been upgraded to the highest accolade of 5 stars. (October 2007)
You will be warmly welcomed by mother and daughter, Joyce and Helen, who will offer you tea and homemade cakes upon your arrival.

The guests lounge offers Sky TV and log fires in season.  The views are some of the most stunning you will see anywhere in Wales.  So come and relax, enjoy the views, read a book, watch a movie or play a tune on the piano!

Walkers and cyclists are always welcome with many of the recognised trails and walks on our doorstep.
We can offer pick-ups, luggage drop-off and secure cycle storage as well as ample guest car parking on a gravel surface.

Our now famous Big Beacons Breakfast will help you start your day, only local produce and free range eggs are served.  Alternatively try our Lite Bite or house specials. Vegetarians, Vegans and childrens breakfasts  are happily catered for.

Things to do locally

The historic town of Brecon is a 10-minute drive or a good morning’s stroll along the picturesque Brecon canal.  The Brecon area offers guests many visitor attractions including the Dan-yr-Ogof caves, Llangorse lake and the Big Pit.  Also to enjoy are the endless options for outdoor pursuits such as mountain climbing, hill walking, canoeing, cycling, pony trekking, bird watching, endless water sports to gentle walks along the river banks of the Usk. Not forgetting the golf courses of Cradoc and Brecon. 

Local places of interest and culture include Brecon Cathedral, the South Wales Borderers museum and Brecon Theatre, situated on the banks of the canal and offering a wide variety of shows.

How to Find Us

Find a warm welcome and immediate sense of calm and tranquillity from the moment you arrive;

By Road;
A40 from Abergavenny, through Crickhowell and one mile past the village of Bwlch turn right, opposite a red post box, enter through a pair of black and white iron gates and turn into Talybryn House through the stone pillars;
A40 from Brecon, drive approx 6 miles until you see a large picnic lay-by on your left hand side, we are the first left immediately after the lay-by, opposite the red post box.

By Rail;
Abergavenny is the nearest station and we can arrange collection if required.

By Air;
Both Cardiff and Bristol airports are approximately just over an hours drive.

Access Statement

Talybryn House welcomes enquiries from disabled guests and we are happy to discuss any additional requirements you may have.

Access to the house is via 5 stone steps to the front porch - a further single step takes you into the main hall where the ground floor is level throughout.  Those with difficulty in walking may use a side entrance with two smaller steps.

All our accommodation is upstairs on the first floor.  This is reached via a large carpeted, sweeping Victorian staircase with a half landing after 18 steps.  Rooms and corridors are spacious and well lit for ease of mobility, with subtle lighting during bedtime hours.

Fridge space for medication is always available if required.  A downstairs cloakroom is also available.

Mid July:
Royal Welsh Show - the largest agricultural show in Europe. Great fun for all the family!

End July:
Abergavenny Arts Festival - a programme of music, drama and art exhibitions.

The Brecon Jazz festival - a must for all music lovers!

End August:
Llandrindod Wells Victorian festival - with a grand finale of torch lit procession and fireworks!

Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains - a celebration of food, farming, music and crafts.

Abergavenny Food Festival - celebrity cooks and stall promoting local & regional produce.

October:
Brecon Beacons Food Festival - food and drink from across Wales to sample and buy.
